LOWELL -- The Gentlemen Songsters are tuning up for the holidays, practicing their four-part harmony a capella vocalizing for several coming events.

The barbershop chorus, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, will stroll downtown Lowell on the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 24, as part of the City of Lights celebration.

"We'll be singing Christmas songs," said chorus member Tom Bissonnette.

The chorus, formed in 1986, is comprised of 33 members from all walks of life, ranging from their early 20s to mid-80s. They've been spreading holiday cheer at the City of Lights for the past several years.

This year, there will be an extra lilt in their voices as they sing, as they recently won "most improved chorus" at the district convention.

"We earned that since we showed the largest change in score from previous competitions," said Bissonnette.

The Gentlemen Songsters, directed by Karen Rourke, is a member of the Northeast District and competes against choruses from New England, New York and Eastern Canada.

"We placed fourth overall out of 14 chapters and are very proud of our accomplishment," said Bissonnette.

Other public events include a free performance at The Loop shopping mall in Methuen on Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1-3 p.m.

The Gentlemen Songsters will also perform a Christmas Cabaret on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 3 and 7 p.m. at Nabnasset Country Club, 47 Oak Hill Road, Westford. Tickets are $10, adults; $5, students.

The chorus rehearses Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 10 Billerica Road, Chelmsford. Rehearsals are open to all and new members interested in singing with the chorus are welcome. Visit www.gentlemensongsters.org for info.
