LOWELL -- Painter Eleanor Sackett taps into family ties in her show The Extended Family, which opened last week and runs through Feb. 24 at The Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue.
She encourages viewers to "come meet my family" in her representational portraits of people she knows well, who range from age two months to 84 years.
Sackett, who has a studio in one of the artist lofts at WAS, has painted and drawn all her life. But her full-time training as a painter only began in 2000 with encouragement from a teacher and her husband. She trained under Paul Ingbretson at his studio in Manchester, N.H.
Her current portrait work, done from life or from photographs, differs greatly from the early abstract watercolor paintings she did as a child.
In her oils on canvas, Sackett seeks "to leave a bit of myself behind in each painting. I hope people will look at it and say, 'Yes, that is who she was.' "
