LOWELL -- The Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary is planning its 31st annual Taste of the Town, a food-sampling party to raise money for LGH.

The event will take place Sunday, Oct. 22, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., at UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell.

Boston-area radio and TV personality Billy Costa will serve as master of ceremonies.

Since its inception in 1951, the Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary has worked to promote and advance the welfare of LGH through ways approved by the Governing Board of the hospital, according to the group's website.

"So far we have 15 restaurants participating, like Nobo in Chelmsford, The Establishment (also in Chelmsford) and Methuen's The Irish Cottage," said Mary Bennett, a member of the auxiliary and the event's Restaurant Committee.

"This is our largest fundraiser, and we have committed to a $500,000 gift over four years to the new ICU unit for the hospital. Lowell General's a great community hospital and, of course, it's the only one in this area. ... We just really want to make it the best in the Merrimack Valley."

Amy Werner, Lowell General's director of philanthropy, said proceeds from the event will go toward 11 new monitor beds to take care of the hospital's sickest patients in the Gil and Marilyn Campbell Intensive Care Unit, which opened this past February.

"They make a significant contribution every year to the hospital based on their fundraiser," Werner said of the auxiliary.

The participating restaurants will compete against each other for best appetizer, best entree and best dessert.

Tickets to attend "Taste of the Town" are $100 per person and $125 per patron. For tickets, visit https:// squareup.com/store/ lowellgeneralauxiliary.
