TEWKSBURY -- The Tewksbury Lions Club is gearing up for its second annual Sock Hop at the Tewksbury Country Club this month. Last year's inaugural event attracted about 280 people who enjoyed live entertainment, snacks -- and of course a night full of dancing.

Jerry Selissen, a member of the Tewksbury Lions Club, said the goal this year is to have 300 people come out. The event will be held Friday, Jan. 26. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and live entertainment will begin at 8 p.m.

Last year, the Lions were able to raise money for five $1,500 scholarships for Tewksbury Memorial High School students. Selissen said that is also the goal this time around.

"It's a fun night out and for $20, it's really good entertain- ment," Selissen said.

"From the minute this band started playing, everybody was up and dancing. It was really pretty cool."

Like last January, the event will feature live entertainment from the band Reminisce of New England, which is known for performing music from the 1950s and '60s. Jack Mento, one of the band members, said performing at last year's Sock Hop was energizing.

"It was perfect for us because the crowd that was there was really into our music," Mento said.

"It brings you back to the time when it was all real back in the '50s and '60s. It was a great time in our life."

Mento said the venue was beautiful and that it's always exciting to have an audience that's engaged in the music and ready to dance.

"We love to engage the crowd, and it kind of pumps up our adrenaline and allows us to have a great time, too," he said. "They can take home some great memories and, hopefully, we bring back some great memories that people had when they were young and listening to this music for the first time."

Mento said Reminisce will perform old favorites as well as some other songs not featured at last year's event. Those in attendance are welcomed to bring their own dry snacks, except for popcorn.

"January is typically a pretty quiet month, so we're trying to get people to come out on a Friday night to raise a few bucks," Selissen said.

Selissen said the Lions are also looking for corporate sponsors to donate $350 to sponsor all three of its main fundraising events -- the Sock Hop, Golf Tournament and Spaghetti Supper.

Mento said the Sock Hop will be a great opportunity to have fun on the dance floor while helping a charitable organization.

"Come out, have a good time, be a little crazy, dress a little differently and have fun with us. You owe that to yourself to give yourself that good feeling again when you were young."
