Two newly announced shows this week bring the 2019 Lowell Summer Music Series lineup into double figures in terms of number of shows, with more announcements expected in the coming weeks.
The latest announcements -- Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m., and The Mavericks on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. -- expand upon the unique, eclectic array of shows that make the Lowell Summer Music Series a live-music lover's destination from the time the kiddos get out of school until they return in the fall.
The Mavericks show, on sale now at www.lowellsummermusic.org, features advance tickets for $46 with premium seats in front of the stage for $146.
The Mavericks combine Tex-Mex, neo-traditional country music, Latin and rockabilly into a tasty Miami-based stew. There's good reason for those diverse influences, as lead singer Raul Malo was born in Miami to Cuban parents. Formed in 1989, the group is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The Mavericks won a Grammy Award in 1995 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal for their single "Here Comes the Rain." They've also won three Academy of Country Music Awards, two Country Music Association Awards and an Americana Music Association Award.
Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey are two-thirds of Peter, Paul & Mary. (Mary Travers died in 2009.) Everyone knows who they are, and their biggest hits remain the classic folk songs "If I Had a Hammer," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Puff (the Magic Dragon)," "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane."
The trio put out their self-titled debut album in 1962, yet Yarrow and Stookey remain vibrant touring acts as well as devoting their time to social and political causes.
Expect more shows to be announced in the next couple of weeks, with a few other shows waiting for final approval before they can be announced.
