TYNGSBORO -- There have been areas of the Tyngsboro Public Library that have received upgrades or touch-ups through the years. Now, the focus has turned to the Children's Room.

The room is currently undergoing what Director Susanna Arthur describes as a partial makeover.

"We thought it's time to do some updating and maybe make it a little bit more visually appealing place for the children, maybe some updated furnishings and wall decor and updated messages," she said, adding that a digital display screen will also be mounted on the wall. "We also want to bring new technologies into the Children's Room."

The new technologies being introduced to the room include STEM (acronym for science, technology, engineering and math) kits and games and STEM backpacks for older children which contain books and educational materials that each fall under a specific theme. The STEM backpacks, Arthur said, were the idea of a Tyngsboro Girl Scout for her Gold Award.

Arthur said she feels the upgrades show that Tyngsboro Public Library staff are constantly striving to provide an appealing place for children.

"It's showing that our infants, even, and children are a priority and that we can be aware of their world and teach literacy in ways that are going to be appealing to them and show them that we can change and we're progressive," Arthur said.

"And that we bring new tools that are going to be, again, appealing to them."

The budget for the upgrades project is $5,000, with funding from The Friends of the Library and donations from Digital Federal Credit Union, as well as individual donations.

Lori Furtado, the library's Head of Youth Services, said the upgrades are going to bring a lot of personality into the Children's Room. As part of the makeover, she has been working on a new "tween" corner for library users between the ages of 10 and 12.

"They've never really had their own space, and it would be nice for them to be able to feel like they can come over here and relax," Furtado said. "Not worry about being in that area of the room where it's all the little, little kids' stuff, you know, so they feel like they have their own special spot."

Kristine Wilson, a mother of three and a new resident of Tyngsboro, expressed excitement over the upgrades.

"I think it's a great idea. We actually home school our kids so we love the library," Wilson said. "To us, it's a great resource being able to be here and use the books. The kids love coming to the library, and they always have."

The Children's Room's new look will be celebrated Saturday during an event called "NEW for You!" The celebration takes place at the library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
